Carotid Stenosis: Surgical View Points
Cho Yong-Pil

Abstract
Cerebrovascular accident remains the second most common cause of death worldwide, and is one of the most common causes of disability. Atherothromboembolic ischemic infarction accounts for nearly half of stroke in Korea. Carotid endarterectomy is a durable procedure for prevention of recurrent neurological symptoms and stroke in patients with significant internal carotid artery stenosis. The efficacy of this operation has been established by several randomized controlled clinical trials. However, when carotid endarterectomy is performed in the standard fashion, there have been some controversies of this surgery, such as indications and timing of carotid endarterectomy, anesthetic methods, and closing techniques. I reviewed the recently updated guidelines for the invasive treatment of carotid artery disease and reported the results of carotid endarterectomies, performed from September, 1995 to December, 2010 at our institution.
